HBCU alumni, family, and friends celebrate tradition with barbecue, music, the outfits and energy, and of course, the game. From seafood boils, grilled meats, smoky barbecue, and lots of school pride, an HBCU tailgate experience is as hype as it gets.
Planning Your HBCU Tailgate Food
For an HBCU tailgate, it’s best to think beyond burgers and hot dogs; of course, you’ll want to have those staples on hand because, why wouldn’t you? But it’s also a great time to step up your game! Think chili simmering in a slow cooker, finger foods that travel well, and of course, drinks and desserts.

Make-ahead dips are also a great idea for your HBCU tailgate party; favorites like buffalo chicken dip or queso and chips are always a crowd pleaser. And don’t forget hummus and pita for those looking for lighter fare! Other great items that work well for tailgating are mini smokies or meatballs in sauce slow slow-cooked so they’re steaming hot and ideal for grab-and-go mingling.
Of course, you can’t go wrong with chili at a tailgate; it’s warm and filling, especially if you’re in a colder climate. Plus, it’s easy to serve as an addition to walking tacos. Pulled pork sandwiches are always a hit, especially if they’re made with a Black-owned brand BBQ sauce like Big Al’s Gourmet Sauces.
For dessert, brownies and cookies work well. Or, even lowcountry chewies like these from Carolima’s. What’s a tailgating party without tables, folding chairs, and a tent? Consider purchasing these themed to your favorite team’s colors or logo; this adds a festive touch that truly shines a light on where your team loyalties lie.
A portable grill is a must, also, and some fans go as far as setting up a smoker to prepare their meals. While all of these things are great, you don’t need to break the bank. A simple grill, extra ice, tables, chairs, and it’s a party. But, definitely don’t forget the music!
Comfort is Key
There’s nothing like being cold and uncomfortable to ruin a good time. So, don’t let the weather bring your HBCU party down. When it gets chilly outside, a little preparation can make your tailgate party bearable in inclement weather. Dress in layers! Consider outdoor heaters, portable propane heaters, or a fire pit if allowed. Not many do for liability reasons, so be sure to check.
Serve warming beverages like cider, cocoa, or hot coffee, and keep rechargeable hand warmers or HotHands packets nearby. Fleece throw blankets are always a hit as well, so stash a few around your site in case they’re needed.
Games Before the Game
