It’s the month of being extra black and I love it! I prefer to be called black, not african american cause why do we gotta be hyphenated? We are back with another edition of The Gullah Porch, where we meet for the tea, some shopping, some wisdom and something to read about us black folks. Someone asked me why I don’t put this on Substack, and I could, but why not put it on the website I already own? Even if one person reads it, that’s enough for me.

Wisdom

Be careful who you pretend to be. You might forget who you are.

We are still the first in many things, but we will never be the last.

Ask the Geechee Gal

Q: When was the first time you experienced racism?

I was 16 and just got my drivers liscense. I was driving 35 mph in a 60mph zone. A white cop pulled my mom and I over. My mom, who usually will cuss you out, got quiet and told me to put my hands on the wheels, don’t talk back, and don’t reach for anything if I wanted to live. This was the late 90’s. The white cop came to the car asked for what he needed and asked why I was going slow. I said I had just gotten my DL that day and wasn’t aware. He looked at my mom and told her to get her Nigger child in check before he does. He threw the license and insurance back at us and left. We didn’t move until he got from behind us. My mom said if a white cop stops you, do as you are told so that you will live to see another day.
